Drive and Carsguide Hop Into Bed (or share driving?)!
Not an acquisition, but some big news today nonetheless. It seems that strong media rivals Fairfax and News Ltd have hopped into bed together. Or maybe that should be, ‘News Ltd has decided to ride shotgun with Fairfax’?.
Fairfax’s drive.com.au is now to provide News Ltd’s carsguide.com.au with dealer listings (Fairfax Digital chief executive Jack Matthews said):
“The deal will involve Fairfax Digital’s drive.com.au sales team taking responsibility for all car dealer listings on News Ltd’s competing site, carsguide.com.au. It will result in listings appearing simultaneously on both websites.”
Says NDM chief executive Richard Freudenstein said in a statement:
“This agreement with Drive will increase the amount of cars on our site, improve the consumer offering, build traffic and therefore be better for advertising,”
It seems that both websites will continue to sell their own private classifieds and operate independently.
This then, sees the combined reach of Drive’s listings grow to around 1.5million eyeballs per month, still shy of Carsales (2 mil+), but gaining ground.
Could more deals be in the wings to bridge the gap to (or protect the) ‘top spot’ in the Australian online auto classifieds market?
