Hang On To Those Generic Domain Names!
Thats right, hang on to them! Domain names are getting some good prices in the market again if the recent auction at Monikers in New York is anything to go by (and my own recent domain name sales too).
One of the best ways to look at the value people are placing in online business is in the sale of generic domain names. I always find it interesting to see what sort of demand there is for domain names.
There have been some truly remarkable prices paid for some domains in the past, and recently more were auctioned in New York.
I have included some of the more noteworthy results here :
- Seniors.com $1,800,000
- CreditCheck.com $3,000,000
- CarSales.com $400,000
- CheapGames.com $45,000 (cheap I think!)
- Locals.com $250,000 (great name for social network site etc)
- Males.com $55,000 (Mens Health style URL, or Gay Porn?)
- Lick.com $60,000 (have a guess what site this will be!)
- Blogging.com $135,000 (Hey, its all the rage)
I was pleasantly surprised a few months ago when we were approached (by two different companies in the same week as luck would have it) wanting to buy about 5 of the spare domains that we owned.
We never thought we would sell the either. Every 2 years we had a quick discussion that went something like this…
“So, we have this renewal due for xxxx, should we keep it? What are we going to do with it?”
“I don’t know. Its only a few dollars, just hang on to it”
They were only Australian domains, but we sold them for 5 figures. Not too shabby. Lucky we were optimists… :)
We should have held on to crap.com.au. Just couldn’t work out what the hell to use it for!
