PESA Critical of eBay Marketplace and Strategies

The Professional eBay Sellers Alliance (PESA for short) published a fairly scathing piece on eBay recently.PESA - Professional eBay Sellers Alliance

Jonathon Garriss, Executive Director of PESA published the position statement highlighting PESA’s thoughts regarding the current state of eBay, and how they may have missed the boat.

PESA warned eBay 2 years ago about the changing marketplace.

“It is the opinion of PeSA, that the eBay marketplace has continued to degrade and the current state is unhealthy”

In summary the statement says:

“It is of great concern to the members of PeSA that eBay’s slow recognition and even slower response to important issues will result in the permanent decline of the eBay marketplace as a channel for merchants.”

As a PESA member I may personally be inclined to agree.

Other marketplaces (particularly Amazon) have been making solid progress and improvements in their marketplaces with programs designed to grow their seller base, improve performance for sellers and for buyers also.

eBay’s changes have been minimal, and changes they have made seem to have been ineffective in convincing larger sellers to remain committed.

Many sellers in the PESA group (including ourselves) have been focusing on different sales channels as the eBay marketplace continues to become a more difficult place to transact successfully and profitably.

Issues of fee amounts, fraudulent transactions, trust and safety concerns and more continue to hamper eBay and their sellers.

PESA goes further in saying

“The result is that approximately 45% of active eBay users stop using the site each year, according to eBay’s published reports. It would not be surprising to see net active user growth of zero or negative in the very near future.”
